I've finally finished
Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360 and I must say - I didn't know what I had stumbled into.
For starters someone seemed stunned when I told them it was four disks. I didn't think anything of it because I was use to older PS2 games that can require multiple disks.
But those were disks and this ..
THIS IS 4 DVDS.
So yeah - A LOT of game time. I was rather disappointed to hear that the trailer with the Jefferson Airplane "White Rabbit" song actually turned folks away. That wasn't the first trailer I saw, but I thought it was Awesome.
Good Stuff:
This was a decent game. It didn't seemed forced. You didn't have to swallow half as much crap as you for Final Fantasy 6-10 to get to the plot. I mean some things in them there Final Fantasy games really stretched. We're talking Epic Plotlines of the likes not even TeleMundo has seen.
( And let's talk about FF and these guys for a bit )As I said before, if you ever loved FF - this is the game for you. Even if you walked away from FF like I did. This game has what you liked. And FF fans will enjoy the heck out of this game.
Remember - you can't rabidly call it a FF rip-off, the creator of FF made it.
This is an In-Game shot. And I will LJ cut this is you need me to
The animation is great and the story is easy to follow. The voice acting is in multiple languages and everything sounds great (I, ironically, prefer to not hear the characters in English. I gave them a try ... shudder). I enjoyed switching thru the various languages.
Any article you give the characters will actually show up in "matinees" which are like cut-scenes only with a more in-game feel. You'll also see them in combat.
No talking animals try to join your party.
The Bad:
It must be modder's curse, but I can tell it was rushed in some areas. Places where apparently they just got tired of fucking with it. Also despite it being on 4 dvds, when someone has a flashback, it's an effing text story.
I ranted about it at length over here.
Face it, we love the cut scenes. To suddenly have to read jumping and wiggling text on the screen while the background changes color is rather a bit of a let down after everything else. Thankfully you can put these off and they don't have to interrupt the flow of the game. They are there to help you understand the character and add a little flavor to the game. Plus they went to a lot of trouble to make sure it matched up with most people's reading speeds.
A few sound glitches were found on Disk 4, that's just nitpicking.
Das ScoreOut of 10, I give it an 8. An awesome game but there was noticeable room for improvement in some technical aspects.
Playability: Yes, very easy.
Plausibility: Very good. Everyone has a valid reason to stay in the party throughout the game. It's never a hyper creature bouncing up and down saying "I'll join you!" for no reason at all.
Likability: For the most part, you will like most of the characters.
Freedom to roam: Yes. While there is some railroading, you are free most of the time to move about the world as you uncover spots. This makes grinding a tad easy. Also the music in the Map screen where you choose your destination is an excellent Andean song (though it does bring on the electric guitars for no reason if you stay on that screen too long). And whoever has borrowed our Markuhuasi - we'd like it back.
Note* this is probably also why there are so many disks. Places you went to on Disk 1 are still open on Disk 4.
Would I play this again: Yes. Yes is rare. I rarely say yes which is why this Yes is important. I hardly replay games. I can give a game a 10 and not want to replay it.
( Onto my rants and possible mini spoilers that are actually warnings )So all in All - a definate BUY recommendation.
I'd loan it to you, but
corzican is starting his game on it.
And I wanna play it again...
